The US Government has awarded Rocket Lab, an aerospace manufacturer and launch service provider, a $515 million contract to build 18 satellites.

A Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing from December 21 revealed the contract details including the designing, manufacturing, delivery, and operation of 18 space vehicles.

The total value of the contract is $515 million, which includes a base amount of $489 million and incentives and options totaling $26 million.

This is the biggest contract for Rocket Lab and the company could use this momentum as a growing power in satellite and launch services, a market dominated by SpaceX.

According to the filing, these rockets in the contract are scheduled with a delivery date in 2027. The Rocket Lab contract includes operating the satellites through 2030 and the operational contract could extend to 2033.

For now, the SEC filing doesn’t reveal the customer’s name, which might be the Space Development Agency (SDA). SDA operates under the US Space Force (USSF) and deploys disruptive space technologies in low Earth orbit.

Earlier this month, SDA Director Derek Tournear said that the agency was negotiating a contract with an unannounced supplier for 18 satellites to expand the US military low Earth orbit constellation.

Back in October, SDA announced an award of $1.3 billion to build and operate the Tranche 2 Transport Layer (T2TL) – Alpha variant prototype constellation. It consists of 100 satellites.

SDA confirmed that the satellite constellation will engage in global communication access and fetch accurate and encrypted connectivity to support defense missions.

The Long Beach headquartered Rocket Lab is known for its small-size satellite launch services using an “Electron” rocket. However, the company is also working on a heavy-duty rocket Neutron, which could make its first flight in 2025.

A week ago, Rocket Lab launched its 10th consecutive mission of the year, surpassing last year’s 9 missions.
