Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) announces Starlink internet installation
Starlink is adding a new customer from the maritime industry Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) and it is installing this Starlink satellite internet service on its entire fleet.
The latest announcements from OSG mark a new development in the Jones Act and US Flag industries by enabling Starlink internet in its fleet of OSG and ATC.
OSG has been testing Starlink internet connectivity in its fleet since early 2023 and it’s confirmed that the full installation will complete by the end of this year.
It anticipates that Starlink will allow seafarers to connect to high-speed internet in remote maritime locations and remain connected for video calls and streaming services as well as social media at sea.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation designed and developed by SpaceX and it currently operates in many countries around the globe. Starlink offers services for both consumer and business customers.
Starlink Maritime covers merchant vessels, commercial fishing, research vehicles, and off-short engineering. All four of these maritime fleets could get customized performance from Starlink.
Fleet management could remotely monitor and customize Starlink’s fleet from a single portal. Starlink also implements end-to-end encryption to protect data and maintain confidentiality over user traffic.
“The goal of the Starlink install was to enhance vessel communications and improve our crew’s ability to connect with family and friends. Our investment in the Starlink technology represents a major step forward in our industry” said Patrick O’Halloran, Chief Operations Officer (COO) at OSG.
